Life Coaching is Not a Scam!

The work of a life coach is not simple. Given the incredible levels of variation that exist in people, there will rarely be two cases that can apply the same solutions. Each case is as unique as the individuals themselves. Life coaches get to the bottom of things by asking the tough questions.

If you’re wondering if life coaching is a scam, the short answer is no. Great coaching truly does work and is backed up by life coaching research.  However, it can be difficult to determine whether your time spent with a coach will actually result in change. A qualified coach will not only build trust, but intimacy.  They listen to what you say, and—perhaps more importantly—they listen to what you don’t say. They ask powerful questions that lead to clear breakthroughs.  If a client responds to a question with “Wow, I hadn’t thought of it that way before”, then a new perspective is on the horizon.

Life coaching research has suggested that emotional intelligence is an invaluable trait for a coach to have. Emotional Intelligence is a person’s ability to recognize their own emotions and those of others. People who have emotional intelligence can appropriately identify and label different feelings. They can also effectively manage emotional intensity and use emotional information to guide behavior.

While similar to empathy, emotional intelligence is more introspective in terms of managing emotion, whereas empathy involves sharing in the emotions of others. It may be surprising to learn that some of the skills associated with emotional intelligence are learnable and can play a major role in the facilitation of change.

Skills such as realistic introspection, recognizing problematic emotional states, and managing those tricky emotions to achieve one’s goals are all associated with a high emotional intelligence—and they are exactly the types of things an effective life coach will assist you with.
